Is Unisom Safe During Pregnancy?

While you toss and turn, struggling to fall asleep, you may start to wonder, “Is Unisom safe during pregnancy?”

This relatively common drug is often used to help people fall asleep, and may also help with nausea and morning sickness. But, as with all things you used to take prior to pregnancy, you have to reevaluate whether or not its safe now that you are expecting.

There have been claims that Unisom during pregnancy can lead to birth defects, or worse. But are there facts to back this up? Let’s dive into some of the research.

What is Unisom?

Unisom (Doxylamine) is a super common antihistamine. It can treat a number of ailments, including sneezing, itching, watery eyes, runny nose, and more. Its regarded as relatively safe for the general population, and can be purchased over the counter at most drug stores without a prescription.

But, Unisom actually has two other uses, which pique the interest of many pregnant women - as a sleep aid and as an anti-nausea.

Antihistamines in general induce drowsiness, and this one has documented use of treating insomnia or other sleep disorders in the short term. And, many women with severe morning sickness have used antihistamines like Unisom for relief.

How does Unisom work?

Because Unisom is an antihistamine, it blocks the production of histamines and acetylcholine within your body. The suppression of these compounds makes the user feel drowsy, and helps them fall asleep.

But, you’re here to learn about Unisom as it relates to your pregnancy. So, let’s get into what science has to say.

Is Unisom safe to take during pregnancy?

In general, there are quite a few reported side effects of Unisom during pregnancy. These include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Hypersensitivity

One study published in 2013 by UCLA  found that women who use antihistamines to help them sleep and avoid nausea may experience adverse effects. Most notably, these pregnancies resulted in premature births or low-birth-weight babies.

These two issues can lead to a host of other problems that can affect your baby throughout their entire life - including infection and developmental problems.

The study took place over six years, and examined almost 600 pregnant women. What it found was that more than 50% of the women who experienced adverse effects during their pregnancy had taken over-the-counter antihistamines, such as Unisom. So, while other studies may claim that Unisom is generally safe to take during pregnancy, the UCLA study does cause some doubt in our minds.

Does Unisom even work to help pregnant women with nausea and insomnia?

On top of safety concerns, we also need to question whether or not this drug even does what its intended to.

Let’s take a look at another study, this one published in the International Journal of Women's Health. Scientists found that existing research regarding Unisom for treating morning sickness was somewhat inconclusive.

While, some women do benefit from taking unisom during pregnancy, that sleep is low quality. The drug will help them fall asleep, but the benefits stop there. You won’t reach the deep, restorative sleep you need while pregnant when you take Unisom. And, when you wake up in the morning, you’ll feel more groggy than if you had not taken anything at all.

Not only can Unisom lead to nasty side effects, it doesn’t work as well as some of the more natural options for sleep aid and morning sickness.
